Concept of i-ceilings

A unique concept in integrated acoustic ceiling systems, i-ceilings utilises NXT flat panel audio technology to provide a loudspeaker system designed to match Armstrongs leading range of ceilings.

The i-ceilings concept allows for invisible loudspeaker solutions which benefit from greatly increased sound dispersion, providing incredibly even levels of sound reproduction with the hot and cold spots associated with traditional cone loudspeaker technology.

Due to their aesthetic and acoustic qualities, i-ceilings sound panels are ideal in education, retail, boardrooms, offices, call centres, healthcare, hospitality and leisure, ensuring even coverage of high quality music and voice reproduction without compromise to the architectural environment.

i-ceilings technology

Armstrong i-ceilings range of Sound Panels utilises the unique loudspeaker technology NXT(trademark). Unlike conventional cone speakers which operate with a piston-like action, NXT technology introduces resonant vibrations to entire surface of a lightweight flat panel via an electronic transducer system.

In effect, the panel within the ceiling tile is vibrating in much the same way as a piano or acoustic guitar. Like these musical instruments, i-ceilings panels generate highly diffuse and disperse sound energy, similar in nature to the light emitted from a fluorescent lamp.

Sound, therefore, is radiated in all directions to ensure highly intelligible voice and music reproduction and even sound coverage. This is different to the results of a conventional piston-like cone speaker which can cause highly directional and often unintelligible speech in large open spaces.

i-ceilings range

Available in the range are:

i-ceilings CS-1000 Sound Panel, available in a variety of finishes: Ultima/Optima Microlook, Ultima/Optima Tegular, Dune PLus Microlook, Dune Plus Tegular, Fine Fissure Microlook, Fine Fissure Tegular, Cortega Microlook, Cortega Tegular,Tatra Microlook, Tatra Tegular. The CS-1000 Sound Panel is 600(w) x 600(l) x 64(d)mm.

i-ceilings Pro Series Sound Panel, available in a variety of finishes: Ultima/Optima Microlook, Ultima/Optima Tegular, Dune PLus Microlook, Dune Plus Tegular, Fine Fissure Microlook, Fine Fissure Tegular, Cortega Microlook, Cortega Tegular,Tatra Microlook, Tatra Tegular. The Pro Series Sound Panel is 600(w) x 600(l) x 64(d)mm.

Use i-ceilings CS-1000 sound panels for voice and low level music, and i-ceilings Pro Panels for higher level music and multimedia applications. i-ceilings recommend 1 panel for rooms up to 60m2 and 2 panels for rooms up to 120m2. Should the room be L-shaped or non-uniform, then a panel in each shaped section may be considered. These examples are based on standard 2.7m floor to ceiling height, for instance, in classrooms.

i-ceilings APA-20 panel amplifier is a 20W compact, panel-mountable amplifier that can easily be wired to a standard passive CS-1000 or Pro Panel to provide a powered version of either i-ceilings Sound Panel versions.

i-ceilings remote input plates include: APA/APJ 1/2-inch jack, APA/AXL microphone input, APA/APL stereo input (CD, video PC, laptop, MP3)

i-ceilings A2001 Sound Processor, analogue signal processor provides i-ceilings systems with a unique combination of music, public address and active acoustics such as sound masking and room conditioning. DSP-based software-controlled processors control and enhance any i-ceilings Sound Systems performance.

i-ceilings Sound Field Voice Reinforcement system

Government Specification of Acoustic Performance in Schools: Section 1 of Building Bulletin 93, the Governments Specification of Acoustic Performance sets the standards for the acoustics of new buildings and explains the requirements and solutions to... provide acoustic conditions in schools that facilitate clear communications of speech between teachers and students. The key aim of a (speech reinforcement) system is to increase the loudness of the direct sound, particularly for more distant listeners, whilst keeping sound as natural as possible. The distribution of loudspeakers and their directional characteristics is a key issue in achieving high speech intelligibility. For large teaching rooms and lecture theatres, loudspeakers can be distributed in the ceiling...

Furthermore, within Appendix 9: Equipment Specifications for sound field systems in schools, the report states NXT loudspeakers and names Armstrong i-ceilings as recommended solutions... there are advantages in use of these loudspeaker types as they provide a better average sound coverage in a room and provide a better level of speech intelligibility under some conditions... less NXT type loudspeakers are required and it may be found that one (loudspeaker) will suffice for the smaller classroom.

i-ceilings Sound Field System A for small classrooms and teaching areas includes: 1 Armstrong Pro Panel, 1 Armstrong Panel amplifier, 1 volume/input control plate, 1 Chiayo infrared receiver system and 1 transmitter pack and microphone (handheld, headset or lapel versions). This system meets and can easily exceed the requirements of Building Bulletin 93, Appendix 8.

i-ceilings Sound Field System B for medium to large classrooms and teaching areas, e.g. I.T. training, music, drama rooms, lecture theatres, includes: 2 Armstrong Pro Panel, 2 Armstrong Panel Amplifier, 1 Volume/Input control plate, 1 Chiayo infrared receiver system, 1 transmitter pack and microphone (handheld, headset or lapel versions).

Optional accessories for Sound Field Classroom systems are: infrared extension detector, batteries and charging unit. Built-in detection is only functional in free-standing applications. Plenum sited installations require infrared extension detector.

Simple control via the Input control plate, allows adjustment of main volume control and the ability to plug in external audio sources such as CD, DVD, minidisk or PC for playback of music, presentations, movies etc (further input/control plates are available).

i-ceilings Sound Field Systems also feature infrared wireless microphones, allowing the teacher to roam freely around the classroom without the obstacle of trailing wires or cables. Unlike simila radio-based systems, i-ceilings infrared system does not require a license and will not radiate the signal to adjoining classroom areas (allowing for simple, cost effective multi-room systems and ensuring secure voice signals where required).

i-ceilings Sound Systems Approved Installer Network (ISSAIN) have developed a network of leading installers throughout the UK, who possess a great deal of knowledge and experience of audio system design and installation within specific market sectors. All ISSAIN members are fully trained and meet stringent criteria to ensure all i-ceilings installations they undertake are completed to the very highest standards. Though there is no obligation to use an ISSAIN member for your i-ceilings installation, we can recommend one to suit the specific tchnical and geographic requirements of your application.

Using i-ceilings in a Sound Masking system

Conventional sound masking systems traditionally require specialised loudspeakers installed within the ceiling plenum to evenly distribute the masking noise around the space. A conventional system, therefore, will normally be in addition to an installed PA and/or background music system with higher costs and much longer and more complex installation times.

Due to increased clarity and high dispersion characteristics of Armstrong i-ceilings Sound Panel, only one system is required to provide sound masking, voice and background music. Used in conjunction with i-ceilings A2001 Signal Processor/Masking Generator, i-ceilings Sound Masking is a most effective combined single-system.

Sound Masking systems could be used in retail-style open layouts in banks where music masking system provides client confidentiality when discussing personal finance issues. Another example is in a large common room/meeting space for instance with creative teams of designers and developers meeting to discuss ideaas and strategies in an informal, open plan environment. Here, an i-ceilings-based sound masking system using absorb and block elements can be introduced into the space.
