When a receptionist wants to page someone they press a button on the paging microphone and make their paging announcement.

In a supermarket, for instance, where there are two clear zones, as in the store area where the customers are, and in then back warehouse. The customer services desk can then use a two zone paging system to call either area.

To buy and install a ten zone paging system, for example, is more expensive than single or two zone systems, but what happens frequently, is that the receptionist has no idea in which of the ten zones the person is she is paging, so she hits the ALL button and pages everywhere. In this example, a single zone paging system would be adequate. You can justify multiple zone systems where areas are on different floors and it becomes a fire and health & safety issue.
